KZ&V - The history

The KZ & Vintage Aircraft Club (KZ&V) was founded  31. May, 1969 with the following objectives:

to preserve the aircraft which were built in Denmark by Dansk Aero Industri  (a company established by V. Kramme & K.G. Zeuthen), and other vintage aircraft in airworthy condition.

to promote added interest in maintaining such aircraft in a sound and airworthy condition.

to encourage home-building of aircraft in Denmark, partly of already approved types and partly of replica aircraft in the experimental category.

A few years after the founding of the club, Danish amateur builders were incorporated in the club, and from 1. March 1979 the club was approved as a local branch of the Experimental Aircraft Association , EAA Chapter 655.

The club is nationwide with approx. 700 members, of whom approx. 50 are resident abroad. On Sjælland (Zealand) there is a local branch with about 70 members. In Nordjylland (Northern Jutland) a small “Strut Nordjylland” with about 15 members operates, and on the isle of Als another small group functions as a local branch of the club. At all these locations the members are engaged in restoring vintage aircraft or building new ones.

A quarterly club magazine brings articles and photos of interest to vintage aircraft owners and amateur builders. An annually issued list of members also includes a register of all vintage aircraft in Denmark along with a list of ongoing  restoration and building projects, and the club members’ own vintage aircraft and home-builts.

Over the years the club, naturally, has acted as an incentive to encouraging the members to maintain their aircraft, and the various club activities have contributed significantly to the excellent condition of our old aircraft.

Through a co-operation between SLV (the Danish Civil Aviation Authorities) and KZ&V, new rules for experimental amateur building of aircraft were introduced in 1980, which entails that one can design and build ones own aircraft in accordance with the provisions laid down in BL 2-2.

For the benefit of vintage aircraft owners and amateur builders, the club holds courses within the subjects: wood, fabric covering, metal work and composite work associated with aircraft construction. Furthermore, courses have been held on aerodynamics, GPS techniques, English radio-phraseology brush-up etc. Quite a lot of the members have participated in these courses, which to a limited extent are open to non-members.

The club has a fairly comprehensive library with various reference books and magazines, especially as regards amateur building. It is free for club members to borrow these publications against payment of postage.

Each year since 1971, the club has arranged a flying trip abroad for its members. In this way it is demonstrated that our vintage aircraft are still capable of serving their original purpose: To travel! As occasion requires, the club will also arrange organised tours to the USA, visiting places of interest to aviators; above all, to the mecca of aviation: Oskosh.

Our annual principal event, however, is the International KZ Rally, which since 1974  has been held at Stauning Airport in June. Some 200-300 aircraft from all over Northern Europe attends this rally, at which the club also holds its annual general meeting.

Late every autumn (typically in the beginning of November) there is a “debriefing” arrangement somewhere in Denmark, at which we show photos, videos etc. from the club’s various events in the past season. Old memories are revived, and “hangar-flying” gets new wings.

From November 1990 the Vintage Aircraft Club has had its own building at Stauning Airport, in which it is possible for members and special guests to stay overnight, e.g. in connection with club courses or repairs on their aircraft - or as a base on short holidays.

We are a democratic association, and we do not ask for your position or social status. What unites us is a common interest in old aircraft and amateur building of aircraft. Furthermore, the club is  represented in various councils and committees set up by the governmental authorities in the interest of aviation.

As you can see, The KZ & Vintage Aircraft Club is not an “ordinary” kind of flying club. Primarily, we endeavour to preserve and maintain a common cultural heritage in the form of the old aircraft. If you should have any questions concerning the activities of the club, please contact one of the members of the executive committee. If you feel like joining the club as a member and in this way support our work, please contact the treasurer: Karsten B. Hansen. We need to pool our efforts!
